Helio is Hiring: Lab Technician – Materials Applications

About the role 

We are seeking a Lab Technican – Materials Applications [Ref: T3] to join our applications/formulations team to execute lab work following formulations recipes, and characterization protocols. The successful candidate will work closely with our experienced chemists and material scientists to progress our formulations and products to the next stage of performance required from our customers.

You will be located in our brand new office and laboratories which have been custom designed for Helio. We are based in an attractive location 10 minutes from central Oxford and near public transport.

  • Preparing polymer formulation batches following developed formulation recipes
  • Carrying out stability testing of formulation and films
  • Performing characterisation such as viscosity, optical microscopy and optical performance.
  • Preparing substrates, and materials for formulations
  • Planning and execute experiments under the guidance of an expert principal scientist.
  • Reporting of experimental procedures and results
  • Performing all laboratory work in a safe manner and adhere to company policies and standard operating procedures
  • Sharing basic maintenance and housekeeping duties of laboratory equipment and chemistry laboratories areas
  • Completing batch formulation records and other subsequent documentation and input in company database
  • Maintaining adequate stock of chemicals and consumables


The role would be ideally suited to candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Minimum HNC/HND, or degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or related disciplines
  • Experience with common chemical and optical analytical methods
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent observational and record keeping skills
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Good time management and planning skills
  • Self-motivated, well organised and pro-active learner
  • Ability to follow strict synthetic protocols and be reproducible

The following experience is desirable:

  • 2+ years experience in a commercial R&D entity
  • Experience working in a chemistry laboratory
  • Experience with formulation preparation and deposition of resin thin film using spin coating, blade coating etc…
